Van der Ley did this as early as in 1673 (Voorn 1960, p. 535). Van der Ley’s first paper bore a Foolscap, a mark common in those days. Although the Foolscap gradually went out of use in the eighteenth century, Van der Ley continued to produce paper with this mark for a long time, even after 1700....In this period, however, the most important marks used by the paper makers of North-Holland, were the Arms of Amsterdam and the Dutch Lion, and also the Posthorn and the French Fleur-de-lis (Voorn 1960, p. 541).
