Please note that the pictures of the watermarks and structure of the paper do not represent the true colour of the paper as they were made with a lightsource behind the paper and manipulated to get a clear picture.¶ The best known paper makers of North-Holland used their initials as a countermark from the very beginning of white paper manufacture. Van der Ley did this as early as in 1673 (Voorn 1960, p. 535). Van der Leys first paper bore a Foolscap, a mark common in those days. Although the Foolscap gradually went out of use in the eighteenth century, Van der Ley continued to produce paper with this mark for a long time, even after 1700....In this period, however, the most important marks used by the paper makers of North-Holland, were the Arms of Amsterdam and the Dutch Lion, and also the Posthorn and the French Fleur-de-lis (Voorn 1960, p. 541). Several sheets available (9)
